Export
Since 2006 (European Calendar), the company has been actively engaged in export trade. Mainly, it has been exporting pulses, oil seeds, and cereals to different corners of the world, mainly to Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. To be more specific, the company’s major export items include white pea beans, black beans, light speckled kidney beans, light brown HPS (hand-picked selected), red speckled beans, and red kidney beans. We also export chick peas, soya beans, green mung, bitter lupine, pinto beans, sesame, and nigger seeds. The crop products which MSA is exporting are mainly being purchased from suppliers. MSA also resorted to contract farming as an additional source of export products. In fact, contract farming enabled it to significantly increase export products in terms of quality, quantity, and variety. Currently, the company is working with more than 25,000 farmers through contract farming arrangement and has been providing them with select seeds, pesticides, and advisory services (through professionals it hired for this very purpose). Such support cost MSA more than 62 million Birr in the year 2023 alone.
Despite the engagement of the Business Group in different business endeavours and activities, export is its primary focus area and it can be fairly concluded that MSA is one of the top companies in the country when it comes to exporting pulses and oilseeds. In the last eight years alone, MSA earned 240 million USD from the export of pulses and oil seeds to different destinations, including Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and the Middle East. In fact, it ranked first in six of the last eight years and ranked 2nd and 3rd in the remaining two years. MSA is also planning to boost the export of manufactured goods, including animal feed and edible oil products. The trend shows that the volume of the export has kept increasing year after year and the plan is to keep and maintain the momentum in the years to come.
